Freon represents a variety of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which contain elements such as carbon and fluorine as well as other gases. Freons are colorless, odorless, non-flammable, non-corrosive gases/liquids that are hazardous to the environment.
Appliances containing Freon include some refrigerators, freezer units, water coolers, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners and need to be properly disposed of. See below for ways to dispose of your freon containing appliances.
Appliance Recycling Programs Through Your Electric Company
NYSEG, RG&E and National Grid offer programs to recycle your old working refrigerator or freezer and receive cash. Both also will pay for an old working room air conditioner with a qualifying refrigerator or freezer.
Riester's Appliances, Lowes and Home Depot sell appliances and it is recommended that you have them pick up your old appliance when they deliver your new one.
