Freon Appliance Recycling Options

Freon represents a variety of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which contain elements such as carbon and fluorine as well as other gases. Freons are colorless, odorless, non-flammable, non-corrosive gases/liquids that are hazardous to the environment. Some common appliances containing freon include:

  • Refrigerators 
  • Freezer Units
  • Water Coolers
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Air Conditioning Units

Appliance Recycling Programs Through Your Electric Company

NYSEG, RG&E and National Grid offer programs to recycle your old working appliances and pay you for them.

Picking up Old Appliances

Riester's Appliances, Lowes and Home Depot sell appliances and it is recommended that you have them pick up your old appliance when they deliver your new one.

Other Appliances Recycling Programs

Auburn Transfer Station

The City of Auburn provides bulk item recycling for their residents for a fee and it includes Freon appliances. Pick-ups are available but must be pre-arranged. If you are not a resident of Auburn, you can call the Auburn Transfer Station for information about recycling.
