This program’s goals are to minimize potential health hazards and prevent environmental illnesses and injuries at tanning facilities, increase the public's knowledge of the hazards of indoor tanning and limit tanning access by minors.
Responsibility
Tanning is the response when a person’s skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and results in skin injury and damage. Exposure to UV radiation increases a person’s risk of developing skin cancer.
Ney York State Regulations
New York State regulation prohibits persons under seventeen years of age from using UV radiation devices. It requires that persons between the ages of seventeen and eighteen have a parent or legal guardian sign a consent form before using UV radiation devices.
Adult Acknowledgement
Adults are required to sign an acknowledgment statement that they understand the risks of using UV radiation devices and agree to wear protective eyewear before using the facilities.

Issues biannual permits for operation of commercial tanning facilities.
Conducts inspections of tanning facilities.
Reviews reports of injuries or illnesses related to the facility’s operation.
Responds to complaints and conduct investigations.
Performs enforcement actions for violations of tanning regulations.
