Breastfeeding Support

Welcome to Cayuga County’s Breastfeeding Support Page.  Here at the Cayuga County Health Department we have three Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) available to help answer your questions, provide guidance, and to visit you in your home for FREE to provide breastfeeding support in person!  There are no income requirements, as we recognize the value and importance of all women in our community being able to provide their children with breast milk from the time they’re born, through 2 years of age and beyond.  Our Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) are passionate about supporting mothers and babies through this journey, and they are mothers too-which means that they understand the challenges that can arise.  Remember that no question is too small. It’s so important that you reach out with a call or text message to our team of professionals.  We want to hear from you!  Please see the Resource Guide to the right for contact information, and always remember…

Your body knew what to do to grow your baby during pregnancy.  You trusted it.  Trust that your body can and will still grow them now that they’ve been born.  Trust your body’s ability to Breastfeed!

Our Cayuga County WIC program offers support to breastfeeding clients with one Internationally Board Certified Lactation Counselor (IBCLC) and one Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC).  In addition, the WIC program has two breastfeeding peer counselors to offer support.

Mothers are often told to stop breastfeeding if they need to take a certain medication when the medication is actually safe. There are very few medications that are discouraged during breastfeeding.  Be your baby’s advocate, click here for a resource from the National Institute of Health before making a decision.  Apps for Apple and Android are also available at https://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/help/lactmedapp.htm
