Cayuga County Sanitary Code
In 1994, Article V of the Cayuga County Sanitary Code was revised as a result of increased public concern for water quality and an increased number of beach closings at Emerson Park during the early 1990 s. The revisions called for individual residential wastewater treatment systems (septic systems) within the county to be periodically inspected and repaired if found to be failing. Development of the septic system inspection schedule was based on the system's location to Owasco Lake or Little Sodus Bay.
In addition, the sanitary code requires that all site evaluations and preparation of plans for the repair or replacement of wastewater treatment systems located in the Owasco Lake Watershed be conducted and submitted by a licensed design professional.
