Owasco Lake Asian Clam Task Force Meeting Notes August 29, 2011
Attendees: Amy Barra, Dick Coalson, Anthony DeCaro, Gary Duckett, Katie Jakaub, Hilary Lambert, Sarah Meyer, Bruce Natale, Don Seitz, Alessandro Valle, Michele Wunderlich
- Announcements and Introductions
- Analysis Committee Report
Michele Wunderlich distributed copies of the "Preliminary Survey for Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) in Owasco Lake, Cayuga County, NY." Bruce Natale asked the Task Force to review this document and let Michele Wunderlich know if you have any comments by September 6, 2011. Because there was one clam found in eight feet of water and the scientists' determination that this was probably incorrect, Dick Coalson suggested that additional diving work be conducted. Bruce Natale stated that we should look at the six to eight feet range to see if there are any clams. He asked if local divers could do this. Dick Coalson suggested putting a proposal together and trying to find funds from foundations.
- Mitigation Committee Report
A discussion occurred on lake level and possible drawdown during the winter to kill Asian clams.
- Education and Outreach Report
Hilary Lambert suggested adding information on why we are concerned to the educational flyer on Asian clams in the Emerson Park area.
Michele Wunderlich stated that she has been in contact with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and they can provide generic invasive species signs for boat access sites that are open to the general public. She asked the group for a list of public boat launches and will send the information on.
Next meeting is preliminarily scheduled for September 12, 2011 at the County Office Building.
