Owasco Lake Asian Clam Task Force Meeting Notes April 14, 2011
Attendees: Kathleen Bertuch, Bob Brower, Lisa Cleckner, Dick Coalson, Dave Eckhardt, Bruce Gilman, Sarah Meyer, Bruce Natale, Michele Wunderlich
- Visual Surveys for Asian Clam Shells
Bob Brower and Bruce Natale have conducted some shoreline visual surveys for the Asian Clam. Data from these surveys is available for viewing on the OWN website (www.owascolake.org). Bob Brower stated that he hopes to use the Finger Lakes Institute and Penn State to confirm the identification of shells believed to be Asian Clam. Attendees discussed which sites they were going to visually survey in the next couple of weeks.
- Surveys Via Snorkel and Scuba
Ed Wagner and others have conducted scuba visual surveys in 3 to 5 feet of water along the north end of the lake. They found no live shells in their survey. Data from their surveys is also on the OWN website. Bob Brower is going to talk to the Auburn Scuba Diving Club to see if they are interested in assisting in future surveying.
- Discussion of David Decker's Presentation from April 13th
Bruce Natale provided a quick synopsis of the presentation. Some highlights were they believe their clams have been there 2 to 3 seasons and are abundant between 1.5 and 6 feet of water; Lake George cannot change their lake level like Owasco Lake; when clams are stressed they reproduce more; and they may only use benthic mats to eliminate the clam in 2011 because they may not have enough money to also dredge.
Lisa Cleckner shared the funding application to the Mid-Atlantic Panel on Aquatic Invasive Species (MAPAIS) for a survey, educational and outreach plan ($15,000 request filed in around April 4). Bruce Natale stated that the Cayuga County Water Quality Management Agency submitted a grant to the Delevan Foundation for additional biological surveying of Owasco Lake, training of staff to identify invasive species and education to prevent spread ($19,400 request mailed March 31).
Next meeting will be May 5th at 1:30 pm.
