This program’s goal is to minimize potential health hazards by ensuring that septic systems located within Cayuga County operate satisfactorily. 

 

The periodic inspection of all septic systems in Cayuga County as well as inspections and septic tank pump outs at the time of a property transfer are required by the Cayuga County Sanitary Code.  In addition this program has specific requirements regarding the installation of new septic systems and the repair or modification of existing septic systems.

 
This program provides services in the following areas:
  • Enforces the Cayuga County Sanitary Code that requires the periodic inspection of all septic systems and the inspection of septic systems and septic tank pump out at the time of a property transfer.
  • Reviews plans for new and modified/repaired septic system proposals.
  • Investigates complaints related to failing septic systems.
  • Provides technical assistance to septic system installers.
  • Provides a list of registered septic system installers and septic tank pumpers.
  • Answers questions from the public regarding septic tank operation.

List of Inspectors

This list provides the contact information for those individuals who are certified to perform inspections of septic systems in Cayuga County.  These individuals have attended the three day course offered through the Cayuga County Department of Health.

List of Septic Tank Pumpers

This list provides the contact information for those individuals who are registered with the Cayuga County Department of Health to pump septic tanks.

Variance Request Form

If you feel that to comply with requirements of the Cayuga County Sanitary Code would cause an undue hardship, you may request a variance from the Code requirements.  This request will be reviewed by the variance committee, which is comprised of individuals who are not employees of the Health Department.  If you would like to request a variance, please use this form and submit it to the Health Department.

Affidavit

If you wish to request a variance from having a septic system inspection because your home has been unoccupied, this form needs to be completed and submitted with the Variance Request Form.

Voucher Program

If you feel you are not able to hire an inspector or to perform a routine inspection of your septic system due to financial reasons, you may request a voucher.

Inspection Form

This document is the inspection form used during a septic system inspection.

This is the procedure that septic system inspectors must follow in performing a septic system inspection.

Septic System - New Construction
Instructions

This document describes the requirements for installing a new septic system in Cayuga County.

Instructions Approved Subdivision This document describes the requirements for installing a new septic system within approved subdivisions in Cayuga County.
Application

This application form is required when a plan for a new septic system is submitted to the Division of Environmental Health Office.

Design Professionals

The Cayuga County Health Department requires that new septic systems must be designed by either a professional engineer or a registered architect.  This is a list of design professionals who have performed this type of work in Cayuga County.  You are not required to hire someone from this list, but may use any New York State Professional Engineer or Registered Architect.

Septic System - Repair & Modification
Instructions

This document provides the requirements for modifying or repairing a septic system in Cayuga County.

Application

This application form is required when a proposal for a modification or repair of an existing septic system is submitted the Division of Environmental Health Office.

Septic Tank Installation Form This application form is required if the proposed modification of a failing septic system is a septic tank or if a septic tank needs to be replaced.
