Many people may be aware of what you should have when in an emergency, but many fail to realize what they really need, until they are completely without them.  It would be good practice to prepare an emergency kit as you would pack for a camping trip, that has no running water or electronics or no place in walking distance that you can take advantage of picking up something you "forgot" to pack.  Remember the basic needs:  Food, Water, Shelter.  When those needs are met, you can survive an extended stay away from your normal surroundings.

HINT:  It is recommended that before putting an emergency kit together, create checklist first.  Check lists can be essential when having to "GO" in a hurry.  This check list will also be handy when re-checking that you have your specified items.
