| HIICAP
is a resource for seniors and their families seeking to obtain objective, understandable information about all types of health insurance. Trained counselors provide free and confidential counseling, assistance, and advocacy on these and other health insurance topics: |
- Medicare - Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older and for those under age 65 with Social Security disability benefits for twenty-four months.
- Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap) – many companies market policies to cover the deductibles and co-insurance gaps that remain the patient’s responsibility under Medicare. These policies vary widely in benefits and price. The wise consumer will seek objective advice before buying a policy.
- Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage
(EPIC) – Low and moderate income NYS residents over the age of 65 can qualify for premium free prescription cost-sharing assistance for their Medicare D plans if/when they reach their plan’s coverage gap (the donut hole). EPIC requires all members to be enrolled in a Medicare D prescription plan, and only provides assistance in the coverage gap. Some members can qualify for EPIC assistance for their Part D plan premiums.
- New York Prescription Saver Card
(NYP$) – NYP$ is a free pharmacy discount card that is sponsored by New York State. You can use this card at participating pharmacies to save as much as 60% on generic drugs and 30% on brand name drugs. These savings are provided through the cooperation and support of local pharmacies and drug manufacturers.
- Medical Assistance (Medicaid) -
Medicaid pays for medical care and services for needy families and individuals who qualify under the applicable income and asset rules. Individuals who qualify and whose medical costs are not completely covered by Medicare and/or private health insurance may be assisted with a broad range of service costs such as home aide service and costs for custodial care in a skilled nursing facility. Couples facing long-term custodial care costs for one spouse only should seek informed advice about their medical assistance eligibility before making financial decisions.
- Medicare Savings Program -
Certain low income Medicare beneficiaries are entitled to have their Medicare premiums paid for by their state Medicaid program. Some of these people are also entitled to have Medicaid pay for their Medicare deductibles and coinsurance. These programs are referred to as “buy-in programs.”
- Medicare Part D
is a prescription drug benefit available to everyone who has Medicare, regardless of income and resources, health status, or current prescription expenses.
