Cayuga County calls for voluntary shelter-in-place
Cayuga County has adopted a voluntary shelter-in-place plan. The County is asking residents to alternate the days they go out for necessary items in order to stop the spread of coronavirus.
Effective on Sunday, April 12 to Sunday, April 26, officials are asking residents to limit the days they are in public locations by following the guidelines below.
If you were born in an even year, you can go out for essential items or to a local park on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays as well as Sunday, April 19.
If you were born in an odd year, you can do the same on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays as well as Sunday, April 12 and 26.
“It is our duty to make every possible effort to limit the spread of COVID-19. In addition to the recent death of a county resident, we are experiencing a surge in positive COVID-19 cases over the past few days,” Aileen McNabb-Coleman, Chair of the Cayuga County Legislature, is reminding residents. “If you need to leave your residence for essential needs, try to limit this activity to one member of your household. In addition, please continue to observe the CDC guidelines of maintaining at least 6 feet between yourself and other patrons, as well as abiding by signage at establishments. I also encourage the use of face coverings when you are in public – to protect yourself but also to keep you from potentially spreading the virus without your knowledge.”
“The shelter in place recommendations are a practical approach to reinforce social distancing. We want to diminish the numbers of people in essential public venues, like grocery stores, while not limiting access from what they need. This is also a mechanism to support the use of parks for recreation by household members and to provide some structure that reduces the number of people at the parks at any given day. We strongly encourage people to comply with this recommendation,” stated Kathleen Cuddy, Public Health Director.
County officials are urging the public not to become complacent and are asking for these shelter-in-place actions for the next few weeks to help curb the transmission of coronavirus in our community. The strong hope is that the measures that have been implemented over the last few weeks coupled with adherence to shelter-in-place guidelines will result in an overall shorter duration of these live-changing alterations. With the public’s buy-in and continued discipline, there will be an end to this.
