Breastfeeding Support

Welcome to Cayuga County’s Breastfeeding Support Page. Here at the Cayuga County Health Department, we have Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) available to help answer your questions and provide guidance. Our Certified Lactation Counselors are available to provide breastfeeding consultation in person as needed. There are no income requirements, as we recognize the value and importance of all women in our community being able to provide their children with breast milk from the time they’re born, through 2 years of age and beyond. Our Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) are passionate about supporting mothers and babies through this journey, and they are mothers too-which means that they understand the challenges that can arise. Remember that no question is too small. It’s so important that you reach out with a call or text message to our team of professionals. We want to hear from you!  Please see the Resource Guide to the right for contact information, and always remember …

Your body knew what to do to grow your baby during pregnancy. You trusted it. Trust that your body can and will still grow them now that they’ve been born. Trust your body’s ability to Breastfeed!

Our Cayuga County WIC program in collaboration with the Cayuga County Health Department Maternal Child Health Program offers Certified Lactation Counselors who are available to provide breastfeeding consultation in person as needed.

Mothers are often told to stop breastfeeding if they need to take a certain medication when the medication is actually safe. There are very few medications that are discouraged during breastfeeding.  Be your baby’s advocate, click here Breastfeeding Support for a resource from the National Institute of Health before making a decision.  Apps for Apple and Android are also available at https://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/help/lactmedapp.htm
